Customer support is the easiest remote role to fill and one of the hardest to fill well. Easy, because demand from candidates is enormous. Hard, because the volume of applications makes it difficult to spot the people who will actually be good with your customers.
We see this from both sides at JobsHives. Of the job seekers on our platform who have told us the role they want, 44% are looking for customer service or customer support work, more than software, product, data and marketing combined. Here is what that means if you are hiring.
Where Remote Support Candidates Are
The international pool for remote support work is large and concentrated. Among JobsHives seekers who list a location, the biggest groups are:
- Nigeria: about 30% of seekers
- India: about 13%
- Pakistan, Ghana and Kenya: the next largest groups
- Followed by Egypt, South Africa, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Rwanda and the Philippines
Many of these candidates have strong English, prior experience in BPO or call centre roles, and overlap with European working hours, which makes them a good fit for support teams that serve UK, EU and US East Coast customers.
What Remote Support Candidates Expect to Earn
On JobsHives, candidates targeting customer support roles reported a median expected salary of about $30,000 a year (USD), with the middle half of expectations between $12,000 and $50,000. Expectations vary a lot by experience and country, and many entry-level candidates will accept less for a first remote role. For a full breakdown by country and role, see our remote salary expectations report.
Whatever you decide to pay, put it in the listing. Pay transparency is the single biggest lever on applicant volume that we have measured.
What Works in a Support Job Post: Real Data
One employer on JobsHives posted a remote sales coordinator and customer communications role with a clear salary range and no country restriction. It drew 565 views and 32 applications through Easy Apply in about a week. The company's two roles together converted 5.8% of viewers into applicants.
Compare that with listings that hid pay and required a specific language and country: across 66 such roles, only 0.9% of viewers applied. The work was just as remote. The difference was who could apply and whether they could see what it paid.
How to Screen Remote Support Candidates
- Use a written task, not just a CV. Send two or three real (anonymised) customer emails and ask for replies. Written tone and accuracy predict support performance far better than job titles.
- Test the tools, not trivia. Can they navigate a help desk like Zendesk, Freshdesk or Intercom? A 15-minute screen-share answers this.
- Check connectivity and setup. Ask about internet reliability and backup power. In some regions, a backup plan is the difference between a dependable agent and missed shifts.
- Confirm shift overlap. State the hours clearly in the listing, and confirm in the interview that they can work them consistently.
- Do a short paid trial. A paid week on live tickets with a buddy is the most reliable final check.
Contractors or Employees?
Most small teams start by engaging international support staff as contractors, paid through a contractor platform. If the role becomes full time, exclusive and tightly managed, look at an Employer of Record so you stay compliant. Our guide to Remote.com alternatives for global hiring compares the main options.
Managing High Application Volume
A well-written support role can pull in dozens of applications in days. Plan for it:
- Add two or three short screening questions to your post so you can filter fast.
- Reply to every applicant, even with a short "not this time". It protects your employer brand in tight-knit candidate communities.
- Use an applicant inbox with statuses rather than email threads. JobsHives lets you move candidates through stages and message applicants in bulk.
The Bottom Line
Remote customer support is one of the best roles to hire internationally: deep talent pools, strong English, useful time zone overlap and reasonable salary expectations. Show the pay, open the role as widely as you legally can, and screen with real tickets. Post your support roles free on JobsHives, your first 3 job posts cost nothing.
